While I am proud of my professional accomplishments, my biggest achievement was when I beat breast cancer. It has impacted my life in ways I could not have imagined and the lessons I have learned are profound.
When my late father was undergoing cancer treatment, he told me, ‘They make you feel like cattle, pushing you through the line. It’s inhumane.’ It was only three years later I found myself in my own battle with cancer. Since then I have become painfully aware of how my dad felt.
My experience has presented me with many ideas to help improve the human side of treatment. Utilizing skills from my professional life, I have created a workbook to support patients as they navigate this painful and confusing journey. My hope is for there to no longer be inconsistent and casual touchpoints in the process, but one day everyone will have an experience as unique as the human and their diagnosis.
My workbook is a guide to help you document and plan for your journey and the impact it will have on your life. It contains tools to help you clearly articulate how you are doing, your level of understanding, and what you need from your team to help you feel supported and heard.
If you're interested in getting a copy of this workbook, please reach out to me using the form below. There is no charge. This is meant to be a thought-provoking guide and a tool to have a meaningful and planful conversation with your care team. This should in no way take the place of or interfere with the care that has been recommended by medical professionals.
Here are just some of the tools you will find in the workbook.
Build out a rough draft of your expected treatment timeline so that you can prepare your friends and family for what's coming.
Use a template for each appointment to communicate how you are doing as a human.
One of the most difficult part of an appointment is knowing what to ask. The workbook presents a list of potential questions you may want to consider.
